If you’ve spotted a roach in your home, you probably didn’t stop to figure out its species — you just wanted it gone. But when it comes to pest control, identifying whether you’re dealing with a German roach or an American roach is key to solving the problem fast.

German Cockroaches
Size: Small, about ½ inch long
Color: Light brown with two dark stripes on the back of the head
Habitat: Kitchens, bathrooms, and anywhere with food and moisture
Behavior: Breed quickly and can infest an entire apartment or home in weeks
American Cockroaches
Size: Large, up to 2 inches long
Color: Reddish-brown with a yellowish figure-eight marking behind the head
Habitat: Basements, sewer systems, and sometimes kitchens
Behavior: Strong fliers and more likely to come in from outdoors
Why It MattersGerman roaches need targeted indoor treatments because they nest and breed inside. American roaches often require a combination of exterior treatments and sealing entry points.
If you’re unsure which you have, don’t guess — a quick inspection from a professional can confirm it and save you time, money, and frustration
